6 Back-to-School Decorating Ideas

The start of a new school year brings excitement, fresh beginnings, and, of course, some back-to-school shopping. As a mother and designer, I understand the importance of creating a space that inspires creativity and fosters learning. Whether your student is heading off to college or starting a new grade at home, establishing a personalized and organized study area can significantly impact their success.

At Susan Newberry Designs, we believe that a well-designed room can transform a student's mindset and set them up for success. My daughter, Alison, and I have helped thousands of families create beautiful, functional spaces, and we want to share some of our favorite tips with you.

1. Create a "Dream Board" Wall

Every great idea begins with a vision. Help your student visualize their goals for the year by creating a personalized dream board. This isn't just a corkboard—it's a canvas for their aspirations. Design a stunning visual display of their memories, goals, and inspirations using a beautiful corkboard. They can include photos of friends, dream travel destinations, and motivational quotes. This isn't just decor; it's a daily source of inspiration.

2. Make Their Desk Their Sanctuary

The desk is the heart of any study space. Make it a place they love to be. A cluttered, boring desk can kill motivation. We recommend adding personalized items that make the space feel uniquely theirs. Customized Desk Mats and Mouse Pads are perfect for protecting their workspace while adding a pop of personality. You can use their favorite photos, a motivational quote, or a cool design to make their desk truly their own.

3. Organize with Style

Organization is key to a stress-free school year. But who says it can't be beautiful? Personalized Note Pads and Stationery are perfect for keeping track of assignments, to-do lists, and class schedules. By adding their name or initials, you make the simple act of writing down notes feel special and official. A well-organized, beautiful space encourages a clean and focused mind.

4. Light Up Their Learning

Good lighting is essential for studying, but it can also set the mood. Custom Night Lights can add a warm, inviting glow to their room, making it a comfortable place to read and relax. A personalized night light featuring their favorite quote or a cool design can turn a functional item into a cherished piece of decor. It’s a gentle reminder of the comfort of home, even when they're working hard.

5. Refresh School Supplies

Nothing sparks enthusiasm like fresh supplies. Let kids pick a few fun items—like a Custom Backpack in their favorite color or themed notebooks—to make school feel exciting. Reusable water bottles, lunchboxes, and eco-friendly stationery are great sustainable choices.

6. Personalize Their Space with Wall Art

Wall art can completely transform a room and reflect a student's personality. Our extensive collection of Custom Wall Art offers endless possibilities. From typography prints with inspiring quotes to custom canvases featuring their favorite memories, you can create a gallery wall that tells their unique story. We've written about the power of gallery walls before (as seen in our blog post, The Art of the Gallery Wall). A personalized gallery wall not only makes a room look great but also creates a sense of ownership and pride.

Susan Newberry

Hi, I’m Susan! I’ve spent the last 10 years building my online company. I’ve always loved everything to do with design. In fact, after raising my kids, I decided to go to school and get my degree in Interior Design. While running my own interior design company, I started teaching and found that teaching was what I really loved. Combine that with Interior Design and well, you could say I was on cloud nine. I always loved the technical side of design which led me to graphic design and after studying graphic design, I was encouraged to open an Etsy shop to sell some of my creations. With my attention to detail and being somewhat of a perfectionist, graphic design made perfect sense. In December of 2018, I decided to retire from teaching and devote myself full time to my business and I haven’t looked back since! I love designing art for the home and would love to create something special for you.

It’s true what they say, “Love what you do, and you will never work a day in your life.”
