"If time were a color, I bet it would be a tasteful off-white." ~Greg Parrish
Benjamin Moore announced their choice for color of the year - Simply White (OC-117). The color is not new but one of their off-white colors. I have to admit that I was a bit surprised at first by their choice but as I thought about it, I began to agree. After all, white, which is really the absence of color, is the ultimate neutral and can be used with any other color. White symbolizes cleanliness and purity, innocence and perfection. White is the color of new beginnings. The color white opens up the smallest spaces because it is light and airy. It brings unity to large furniture filled rooms.
Decorating with all white has always proved a bit challenging. Here are a few tips to help you decorate with white successfully:
- Use a variety of textures and patterns to create depth. Layer your furniture with throws and pillows to bring interest to the space.
- Adding black adds sophistication to the space. Use a little or a lot. A little black helps break up the space. Use black for picture frames and small accessories.
- Choose whites that are the same temperature. For example, warm whites yellow based and cool whites are blue based. Keep your whites all in the family.
- Use organic materials such as natural woods and plants to add warmth.
Decorating with white works for both traditional and contemporary spaces. Using white as your backdrop opens up endless decorating possibilities. Maybe Benjamin Moore is on to something with Simply White!
