Pink with Purpose: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every October, the world transforms into a sea of pink. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a deeply meaningful time for many of us - whether we are honoring our own journey, standing alongside a loved one, or remembering someone whose strength forever changed our lives.

At Susan Newberry Designs, my daughter Alison and I believe that home should be a sanctuary - a safe, uplifting space that reflects your journey, honors your loved ones, and celebrates resilience. Over the years, we've had the immense privilege of designing personalized art for homes in 43 countries, listening to your stories, and helping you turn life’s milestones into lasting visual tributes.

This October, we want to help you bring purpose, beauty, and heartfelt honor into your living space.

The Power of Pink in Interior Design

Pink is far more than just a seasonal awareness color; in color psychology, it represents compassion, warmth, hope, and nurturing energy. Incorporating pink into your decor creates an atmosphere of softness and healing that invites quiet reflection and gratitude.

Whether your aesthetic leans toward sophisticated blush tones, warm rose hues, or subtle dusty pink accents, integrating this palette into your home serves as a gentle daily reminder of hope, strength, and love.

3 Ways to Style Pink with Elegance

  • Layer Soft Accent Textiles: Swap out standard throw pillow covers or woven blankets in your living room or bedroom for soothing blush tones. It adds instant warmth without overwhelming your existing color scheme.

  • Feature Botanical Wall Art: Delicate floral prints featuring peony pinks, soft dusty roses, or subtle abstract watercolor palettes bring natural elegance into an entryway or sitting room.

  • Create a Gallery Corner of Hope: Dedicate a specific wall or console table to frame inspirational quotes, meaningful dates, and family photographs surrounded by warm blush accents.

Turn Art into Action: A Gift of Strength

Many of our clients come to us during October looking for meaningful gifts - something far more personal than flowers or a card. A custom, personalized piece of wall art serves as a daily beacon of love for survivors, caregivers, and families navigating a health journey.

Whether it’s custom family name prints, personalized inspirational scripture, or a tailored memory canvas, custom wall decor serves as a physical reminder: You are loved, you are resilient, and you are never alone.

"Art in the home isn't just about matching your sofa - it's about how a space makes you feel when you walk through the door."

Honor a Loved One Today

Chloe, Donna, and Me

For me, Breast Cancer Awareness Month takes on a personal meaning. Four years ago, my youngest daughter was diagnosed with Stage 4 Breast Cancer. Although there have been huge advances in the treatment of breast cancer with the introduction of new treatments, metastatic breast cancer is with her every day. It is heartbreaking to see your loved one go through this, yet her daily strength and resilience are nothing short of inspiring. Her journey reminds us that life’s most precious moments aren’t just found in the major milestones, but in the quiet, everyday spaces we build with the people we cherish most. Navigating a Stage 4 diagnosis shifts your perspective entirely—it brings into sharp focus what truly matters: family, connection, and creating a home that feels like a sanctuary of comfort, love, and unwavering hope. Every piece of art we craft in our studio carries a piece of that intention, serving as a daily visual reminder that no matter how heavy the road gets, you are never walking it alone.

The Healing Power of Home and Legacy Art

When facing a chronic health journey, our physical surroundings take on a profound role. Our living spaces become where we rest, reflect, gather with family, and find solace. As an interior designer, I know that surrounding yourself with meaningful, custom decor does more than fill empty wall space - it grounds you.

  • Creating Calm through Palette: Gentle rose tones, soft creams, and serene botanical palettes reduce visual stress and foster a tranquil atmosphere perfect for healing and quiet reflection.

  • Anchoring Your Family Story: Custom word clouds, family timelines, and personalized inspirational quote canvases serve as daily beacons of strength, reminding your loved ones of their enduring legacy and the community surrounding them.

  • Gifting Beyond the Ordinary: When flowers fade and standard cards are put away, a custom-designed piece of fine art remains on the wall as a lasting symbol of love, prayer, and encouragement.

To all who have faced or are facing breast cancer, I say this: your strength is an art form, and your story deserves to be displayed with pride. Let every day be a tribute to your resilience, hope, and enduring grace.

Hi, I’m Susan! I’ve spent the last 14 years building my online company. I’ve always loved everything to do with design. In fact, after raising my kids, I decided to go to school and get my degree in Interior Design. While running my own interior design company, I started teaching and found that teaching was what I really loved. Combine that with Interior Design and well, you could say I was on cloud nine. I always loved the technical side of design which led me to graphic design and after studying graphic design, I was encouraged to open an Etsy shop to sell some of my creations. With my attention to detail and being somewhat of a perfectionist, graphic design made perfect sense. In December of 2018, I decided to retire from teaching and devote myself full time to my business and I haven’t looked back since! I love designing art for the home and would love to create something special for you.

It’s true what they say, “Love what you do, and you will never work a day in your life.”
